It's Friday and raining in London so I thought members may like to think
about warmer and sunnier places!
The National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI) and the British Association of
Sport and Medicine (BASM) are two medical charities that, in partnership,
run a National Programme of postgraduate sport and exercise medicine courses
for General Practitioners, Hospital Doctors and all other NHS approved
healthcare professionals.
We are now booking for the Practical Sport and Medicine Meeting that runs
from 7 - 14 October 1999. This meeting takes place at the superb
environment of Club La Santa, Lanzarote, whose facilities are used by top
international sportsmen and women for warm weather and intensive training.
This meeting was originally designed for general practitioners, hospital
doctors, chartered physiotherapists and other medical professionals.
Families and partners are very welcome as non-delegates.
The academic content is changed annually and the meeting gives first hand
experience of taking part in a variety of sports. This enables delegates to
develop a better insight into the cause of injuries. The meeting also
covers how the alteration of training and techniques can help to avoid and
manage injury; it has been designed and developed through the experience
gained from previous successful sports injury related courses.
1999 Lectures and Practicals include: practical sports and coaching
sessions, joint examination, discussion of delegate case histories, injury
assessment, examination and management, practical exercise and activity
profiles, warm-up and stretching routines and exercise prescription.
Physiology topics include: heat acclimatisation and rehydration techniques,
fluid balance, use of supplements and training in strength and endurance
events. There is a focus on specific sports as part of the course
curriculum.
Sporting facilities are available for individual use by delegates and these
include an all weather running track, a football pitch, swimming pools,
squash, badminton and tennis courts, weights room, a lagoon with windsurfing
and opportunities for golf, mountain bike and road cycling. There is a full
programme of various aerobic classes including slide, aqua, step and circuit
training.
Evening entertainment includes live shows with the opportunity to
demonstrate your thespian talents, cinema, disco, bars and restaurants.
Trips to explore the island will be arranged. Play group facilities are
available for children over 2 years.
If anyone on the list would like full details of any of this meeting, or any
of the other sport and exercise medicine courses that we run, please contact
