The March 1999 announcement for the Whitemarsh On Database website
(www.wiscorp.com) has been uploaded. The announcement addresses the following
topics:
• Paper of the Month (March): Great News, The Relational Data Model is Dead
• ISO and ANSI Database Meetings
• New paper, Guidelines for the Data Architecture Class: Data Warehouses
• New Course: Enterprise Database in a Client Server Environment
• Project Management Software Progress
• Metabase Progress

The paper of the month for March is, Great News, The Relational Model is Dead.
The title is more than just an attention grabber. When database management
systems were first created, there were three data models: network (e.g.,
DMS-1100, IDS, IDMS, Total), hierarchical (IMS and System 2000), and
independent logical file (Adabas, Inquire, Model 204, and Focus).
SQL has been specified in three standards, 1986, 1989, and 1992.
Beginning in 1992 and continuing to the very time this announcement is being
written, database technologists from 30+ companies around the world have been
hard at work developing the newest SQL standard, SQL/99. The result has been
truly revolutionary. Note, I did not say evolutionary......
The Whitemarsh paper of the month addresses SQL/99. Please download it
and have a good read. After you read the paper I am convinced you will never
again make the assertion that a full use of the SQL/99 facilities makes a
database relational, and that any DBMS that implements SQL/99 facilities will
be called relational.
A short version of this paper can be obtained from The Data
Administration Newsletter website, www.tdan.com. Edition 8 of TDAN has just
been released. It’s a good read. Go there !

I look forward to hearing from you about the Paper of the Month.

Again, thanks for being a Whitemarsh Website Subscriber.

Regards,
Mike Gorman
