WORSHIP IN BIRMINGHAM PROJECT
A CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A CONFERENCE ON THEORISING FAITH: THE INSIDER OUTSIDER
PROBLEM IN THE STUDY OF RITUAL
TO BE HELD AT BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY
30th June - 2nd July 1999
Full cost stlg95.00 full board. Reductions for students. Non-residential options.
The Conference aims to draw together established scholars and research students

community and those who are studying the rituals of others. A particular
emphasis will be placed on studies of faith communities within the British
Isles.
We are looking for a combination of short papers (30 minutes including
questions) and long papers (45 minutes followed by discussion) and would
welcome contributions in the following areas: - Explorations of the different
ways in which faith/experience can be incorporated into theories of ritual and
what such an approach can add to these theories
Studies of the methodological and theoretical issues raised by those who study
the rituals of their own faith community
Questions of language, the body, gender or power within ritual performance
Questions of performance and ritual theory in relation to different faith
communities in Britain
Ethical, and other questions of method, relating to the study of ritual in
performance
