Unless there is a whole book that I don't know about, I assume Jeff Rice is
thinking of 'Winning the Victoria Cross' in Land and Sea Tales for Scouts
and Guides, Macmillan, 1923.
No doubt a real collector could say how rare it is, but I found my copy on
the shelves in one of the second-hand bookshops in Hay-on-Wye, and it
indicates two reprints in 1923, so there must be quite a few of them about.
Incidentally, can anyone tell me about my two editions of Limits and
Renewals? For years I only had a very battered Tauchnitz paperback, dated
April 1933, and labelled 'Not to be introduced into the British Empire and
USA'. I hunted and hunted in second-hand bookshops for a hardback, and
found it last year in The Dominions Edition by Macmillan, dated 1932 and
marked 'This Edition is intended for circulation only in India and the
British Dominions over the Seas'.
Is it coincidence that I have only found overseas editions, or had
Kipling's popularity so waned that very few were sold in England? Any
information would be appreciated.
