The ranks mentioned, subedhar/subedar, jemadhar/jamadar/jemadar, are still
in use in the Indian army to denote Non Commissioned Officers. Other ranks
are Lance Naik, Naik, and Naik Subedhar. I assume a jemadhar sais would
be some sort of ostler.
