SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HUMAN BIOLOGY
Symposium on Human Biology and History
----------------------------------------
University College, Durham, (Durham Castle)
Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 April 1999
Conference Theme
------------------
Our capacity to understand the biology of historical populations has seen
remarkable recent developments on a number of fronts, not only technical,
but also theoretical and analytical. This conference explores the
interface between Human Biology and History, bringing together a range of
researchers who share a common concern with the interpretation of the
biology of historical and prehistoric people. One major objective of this
meeting is to show that what might be called "Biological History", i.e.
the biology of individuals, families and populations of the past, is as
much an intriguing, tractable and proper subject of historical study as
their culture, economics and politics. The symposium also provides a
complementary perspective, however, by illustrating that questions about
the past formulated by historians and others in the pursuit of their own
interests, can be illuminated by the application of biological theories
and methods

The Venue, University College
------------------------------
University College has occupied the Castle since the University of
Durham's creation in 1832. The Castle itself was founded in 1072 by
William the Conqueror, and the beautiful Norman chapel dates from this
early period. In medieval times the castle was the seat of the Bishops of
Durham, who wielded great military and civil power, as well spiritual
authority. The Great Hall, which is the University College dining hall as
well as being used on ceremonial occasions by the University, was built in
1284. The Castle stands within a few hundred metres of Durham Cathedral,
commanding the heights of a thickly wooded peninsula formed by a loop in
the River Wear. The Castle and Cathedral have been designated a World
Heritage Site, and have inspired generations of admirers, including
Nikolaus Pevsner and Bill Bryson. The Cathedral and Castle feature in a
virtual tour of the World Heritage Site, courtesy of the University's
Centre for Law and Computing:
