The Admralty Court books for Southampton 1566-85 (printed) contain many
references to husbandmen in Keyhaven (Hants) using nets for birds. This was
not allowed as the privilege was restricted to those holding their land with
appurtenances by land and sea. I assume they were referring to migrant birds,
particularly wheatears which were a great delicacy, and gulls. There are
several references to such occurences in Dorset in the Proceedings of the
