The Freie Universitaet Berlin (Germany) is pleased to offer to you an
International Summer University course on
"German Literature in the 20th Century"
The International Summer University will take place from July 31st through
August 27th 1999.
The language of instruction will be German.
The course will be taught by our faculty member Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schutte.
We will investigate the divided and disputed history of the two Germanys
through exemplary literary testimony from the 70's and 80's. The selected
works resemble each other in that the authors treat the problems of their
respective societies from a deliberately critical distance, and thus do not
view themselves as partisans of the "other side". This engagement, oriented
to historical reflection, encompasses the attempt to discover alternative
paths of development for both the individual and society. We will identify
and analyze the human and social conflicts presented in the selected short
stories and theater pieces, their representations of both the individual and
society, as well as their possible social functions; we will also deal with
the literary form of each text, as well as its embeddedness in its social
and political context.
Each participant will give a presentation discussing a course text, also
giving basic biographical information about its author. The presentation
should lead into the ensuing discussion by defining and elaborating upon the
questions raised by the text. Student presentations will alternate with
brief orientation lectures given by the professor, and with group
assignments and discussions. The comparative review of texts will be
deepened through collective work on representative excerpts from the
assigned works.
The course concludes with a review of the discussions on the politics of
literature which took place after the "Wende" in 1989/90. The basis of this
section will be several essays on the "German Literature Debate" of 1990/91,
and a small selection of poems.
Also scheduled are a meeting with authors, a literary city tour, the visit
of a museum, and the attendance of a theater performance.
The course meets two days per week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with coffee
break and lunch. An important course requirement are German reading skills..
Two years of college instruction in German have to be documented by handing
in transcripts together with the application.
The tuition for this course is DM 1,200.-. There is an additional onetime
registration fee of DM 150.-. Besides the above mentioned course we offer 14
other fully-credited courses covering topics on Berlin, Germany, and Europe.
