CHRISTOPH HEIN:
EIN CHRONIST SEINER ZEIT
Conference at Vlotho, 14-18 July 1999
Christoph Hein has repeatedly described himself as a 'Chronist' - a
truthful and dispassionate observer of his age. Though his career as a
writer was for a time closely related to the history, and the demise, of
the GDR - he himself said in an interview: "Ich werde als
DDR-Schriftsteller in die Grube fahren" - his recent election as President
of the new, united German PEN Club is an indication of his continuing high
reputation and of the regard in which he is still held.
The coming tenth anniversary of the 'Wende' and the fiftieth anniversary of
the founding of the GDR provide a suitable occasion for a conference
devoted to the work of Christoph Hein, giving an opportunity to reassess
his earlier work in the light of changes over the past decade and to
consider his career since 1989. It will be a small but international
conference, with participants coming in equal numbers from Germany and from
Britain and elsewhere. We are hopeful that Christoph Hein will be able to
visit the Conference and to read from his latest work.
There is still space in the programme for a few more papers , and we would
welcome offers both from established colleagues and from postgraduates
working on Christoph Hein. Papers may be on any aspects of Hein's career to
date, including both his literary work proper and his involvement in public
affairs. Papers should be of 40 minutes' duration and will be given in
German.
The maximum number of participants who are not German citizens is 15, but
this figure still leaves room for anyone wishing to attend without giving
a paper. Those interested are asked to contact us as soon as possible.
The charge for participation, including accommodation and all meals, will
be DM 200.
Please send all offers of papers (one page) as soon as possible to:
