Although I agree that one does not want to cross the line into
excessive "political correctness", I think that confronting
discriminatory jokes is OK when they really upset you and have a clearly
demeaning intent. Even if the only effect is to protect yourself from
hearing it again, I think that is a good result. Also, it does make
people think, at least some people. Many of the people in that audience
may not have known any couples where one partner has a disability, so by
raising an objection, one can make them aware that perfectly reasonable
people have spouses with disabilities.
