My view is that the importance of emanicipatory research
lies in its challenge as to what is higher
level/scientific/intellectual level knowledge. I sign up to
a concept of academic elitism as a non-disabled research
and accommodate my belief in emancipatory research through
working on disability history a) with people with learning
disability and b)care professionals. However, when working
with people with multiple impairments in higher education I
am attempting to challenge the nature of what is regarded
as 'academic' level knowledge through validating (in
the sense of awarding academic credit) their depiction of
their experience as disabled people through the use of
various media other than essays. There is a
intellectual case to be made to the academic elite (which
often includes disabled academics)to justify the inclusion
of people with intellectual disabilities in higher levels
of education. I hope the fact that I am not disabled myself
makes little difference in these circumstances
