Peasants real and imagined - the discovery and representation of
vernacular cultures in Europe around 1900
On the 31st March and 1st April 2000 the University of Brighton will host
a two-day conference exploring the discovery and representation of
vernacular cultures in Europe around 1900.
Proposals of papers are invited from scholars researching aspects of the
history of art, dress, design, photography and film; the history of
anthropology and ethnography as well as those interested in the histories
of institutions like museums. At this conference we plan to explore the
stimuli, forms and consequences of late 19thC and early 20thC interest in
the material culture of the peasantry.
In particular, we would welcome proposals of papers on the following
themes:
* the impact of the discovery of peasant art on architecture and the fine
arts;
* educational and social schemes designed to sustain and promote peasant
work such as the Austrian fachschulen and Russian kustar industries;
* the representation of peasant life in painting, film and photography;
* the discovery of European 'primitives' and modern art;
* the image of the peasant in literature and political discourse;
* the peasant village as the model for artists communities;
* the 'Skansen' movement in Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe;
* the collection by museums and private individuals of peasant art;
* the use of painting, photography and film in ethnographic and
anthropological research;
* the impact of the Arts and Crafts movement on European interest in the
material culture of peasant communities;
* the display of vernacular or peasant culture at expositions universelles
and world's fairs.
This list is far from exhaustive and we would welcome other related
proposals of papers. The closing date for proposals of papers to be sent
to the conference organisers is 1st July 1999.
The conference is being planned in conjunction with an exhibition of the
Haslemere collection of peasant art. This significant collection of
material formed at the end of the 19thC includes peasant artifacts from
Iceland, Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe. It will be on display in
Brighton at the time of the conference.
Only limited funds are available to support the travel and accommodation
costs of speakers at the conference. We plan to use these funds to support
scholars without institutional support and/or from Eastern/Central Europe.
We may be able to suggest suitable sources of funding for speakers.
Negotiations are underway with an academic press to publish the conference
papers.
