CALL FOR PAPERS: RGS/IBG 2000, University of Sussex, Brighton
Political Geography Research Group
SPACES OF DEMOCRACY
Convenors: Murray Low and Clive Barnett, Department of Geography, The
University of Reading.
Democracy is central to a host of contemporary political
transformations, from regime changes in Central and Eastern Europe,
South Africa and Latin America to conflicts over constitutional
change, local government, decentralisation and accountability in the
UK. As a set of contested normative ideals and institutional
practices, democracy continues to motivate political mobilisation and
conflict while in the social sciences, inherited concepts of
representative, liberal and direct democracy are coming under
increasing scrutiny in the wake of concerns about multiculturalism,
gender difference, globalization, new media technologies and social
exclusion. In human geography, while these concerns inform much
contemporary research, there has been relatively little explicit
attention to the changing geographies of democratic practices and
their implications for conceptualisations of democracy in wider
interdisciplinary debates.
This one-day session will bring together empirical and theoretical
contributions which directly address aspects of democracy and
democratization in the context of wider concerns in human geography.
We welcome abstracts (200 words max.) on a wide variety of relevant
themes and issues. Papers which relate to the following general themes
are especially welcome: democracy and difference; democracy and scale;
democracy and public policy; geographies of participation and
representation; democracy and electoral geography; media, technology,
and democracy. In organising the sessions, we will be selecting
combinations of papers which are likely to produce focused debate and
discussion.
Abstracts should be sent by June 30 1999 to Murray Low or Clive
Barnett, Department of Geography, The University of Reading,
Whiteknights PO Box 227, Reading, Berkshire, UK RG6 6AB. E-mail:
