New economic geographies, new methodologies?
Convenors: Ian Cook, Nick Henry and Jane Pollard (all at School of
Geography and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham)
As the practice of `new' economic geography gathers pace, geographers
and other social scientists are giving greater emphasis to the
micro-foundations and inter-connections of economic behaviours. From
this, a series of questions emerge as to how we `do' the new economic
geographies. A range of qualitative methodologies - focus groups,
interviewing, shadowing, participant observation, working in an
organisation and so forth - have emerged to become particularly
important in understanding the contexts within and between which
decisions are made. In spite of the recent Lee and Wills
(1997) collection on new economic geographies, the methodologies of
this `state-of-the-art' have received relatively little attention.
These two sessions explore the methodological, practical and
political problems of `doing' the new economic geographies. For
example:
. Do the new economic geographies entail a shift towards qualitative
methodologies?
. Is there a changing relationship between theories and
methods?
. How does the changing political economy of academic
research impinge on the production and circulation of the new
economic geographies?
. What are the major ethical problems associated with
`doing' new economic geographies?
Those interested in contributing a paper should send a title and 200
word abstract by 30 June 1999 to Nick Henry, Ian Cook or Jane Pollard,
School of Geography and Environmental Sciences, University of
Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT (0121-414-6935). Anyone
wishing to discuss the aims of the session prior to a submission are
invited to contact either Jane Pollard ([log in to unmask]), Nick
Henry ([log in to unmask]) or Ian Cook ([log in to unmask]).
Many thanks.
