As a new member of the crafts discussion list, I would like to introduce
myself as Grace Lees, Lecturer in the History & Theory of Design & Applied
Arts at the University of Hertfordshire. I would also like to inform you of
a conference I have been organizing which is very relevant to the concerns
of the list:

DANGEROUS LIAISONS: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART & CRAFT
A one-day conference at the University of Hertfordshire
16 April 1999

This conference will build on recent ongoing dialogue surrounding the
crafts to explore in particular the interface between art and craft. Are
art and craft mutually informative collaborators or are they hostile
players concerned with distinction? Does a boundary exist between art and
craft and if so, is rigidly or loosely conceived? Some makers would argue
that such definitions do not concern them, and yet these distinctions
determine which galleries, magazines and journals, educational institutions
and audiences works may access.
