University of East Anglia
School of Information Systems
CHAIR (AC241)
READERSHIPS (AC242 & AC243)
LECTURESHIPS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE (AC244 & AC245)
Opportunities to join a group of researchers in computer science with a
vibrant and developing research culture. The School of Information Systems
seeks a team of academics with an established international reputation to
complement and enhance its research strengths. Applications from young,
ambitious teams with excellent track records are particularly welcome.
The present focus of the School is in Speech, Signal and Image-Processing,
Mathematical Algorithms and Computational Models, Distributed Information
Systems, and Computational Geometry. The School has identified two areas in
which it is particularly keen to build:
Information and Knowledge Management Systems
We wish to broaden our presence in the traditional database/systems
analysis areas to encompass modern interdisciplinary approaches to
information and knowledge management such as: workflow methodologies
(theories, tools and techniques); ethnomethodological and other approaches
to system behaviour capture and analysis; new ways of representing,
analysing, and storing knowledge; and formal modelling of complex systems
and their interactions.
Computer Graphics and Vision
We wish to build on the growing links between our computational geometry
group led by Professors Forrest and Arnold, and our rapidly growing image
processing group led by Professor Bangham which recently won several awards
for highly innovative applications of technology to broadcasting. The
intention is to exploit multi-scale sieve tree analysis in a variety of
computational geometry contexts ranging from virtual environments to image
capture, indexing and compression.
The appointments will be permanent except for one lectureship which is
offered for a fixed term of three years.
Joint appointments in the Science Schools at UEA
Applications are invited for two lectureships from researchers of
exceptional promise
LECTURESHIP IN BIOINFORMATICS (AC229)
The new Wolfson Informatics Centre at UEA will be based in the Schools of
Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Information Systems. The
successful applicant for this post will develop novel data processing and
modelling techniques for application to biological imaging and in
particular X-ray and NMR.
LECTURESHIP IN STATISTICS FOR DATA MINING (AC230)
The Schools of Information Systems and of Mathematics invite applications
for a lectureship to develop robust statistical techniques for data mining
in a range of application areas. The successful applicant will he
responsible for working with a number of research groups to develop
appropriate statistical methods.
The above posts are offered for three years in the first instance with
prospects of continuation.
Salaries for all posts will be on the Academic salary scale according to
attainment and experience.
Further particulars and an application form for the Chair should be
obtained from the Registrar and Secretary (answerphone: 01603 593648;
Email: [log in to unmask]) and for the Readerships and Lectureships from the
Personnel Office, University of East Anglia, NR4 7TJ (answerphone:01603
593493, Email: [log in to unmask]), to be returned by 16 April 1999.
Please quote the appropriate reference number of the post for which you are
applying. Interviews for the majority of the Lectureships are being
scheduled for the period 17 to 28 May 1999.
Further details can be found at http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/Research.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr J Glauert, Dean of the School of
Information Systems, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ. (phone:
01603 592300. Email: [log in to unmask])
5 RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS
A number of PhD studentships are offered for studies leading to a PhD in
any of the areas of research mentioned above. Two studentships are funded
by the EPSRC, one or more industrially funded, and a further two from
investment by the University. Applicants should hold or expect to gain a
first class honours degree.
Successful candidates will receive a bursary at the appropriate EPSRC rate
for up to three years and all fees will be covered. The studentships will
commence from 1 October 1999.
Letters of application including a current CV and the names and addresses
of two referees should be sent to Dr J Glauert, Dean of the School of
Information Systems, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ by no later
than 16 April 1999.
Further details can be found at http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/Research.
