Invitation to a Seminar
MULTIMEDIA DESIGN AND EVALUATION
- GETTING IT RIGHT FOR THE USER
City University, London
Tuesday, 30th March 1999
Organised by the EC Esprit EMMUS project
Multimedia is now an everyday part of the user's experience when
interacting with IT systems. Applications where multimedia is often a key
element include: e-commerce, Digital TV services, public information
systems, educational software, in-vehicle devices, and the World Wide Web.
Although there is a strong desire to develop multimedia applications, and
many tools for doing so, it is essential that resulting design meets
end-user needs. Poor designs can lead to, for example, daunting systems
that the public feels uncertain to approach, frustrating web sites that
take too long to navigate, and noisy educational software that disrupts the
classroom.
This seminar will address the design and evaluation of multimedia
applications from the point of view of the end-user. It will address
questions such as:
* What general ergonomic recommendations exist for good Multimedia
design?
* How can a public information system be made usable?
* Do Human Factors guidelines conflict with innovative design?
* How can Web-sites be evaluated on-line?
* Image quality of video-conferencing systems?
* What Human Factors issues must be faced in developing Digital TV
applications?
The seminar will be composed of a series of presentations and a panel
discussion. It will be aimed at commercial designers of Multimedia and HCI
(Human-Computer Interaction) researchers. It should also be relevant to
project managers who wish to obtain an overview of key issues in Multimedia
design.
There will also be a presentation from the DTI on the European Commission
Framework 5 Key Action III - "Multimedia Content and Tools". Delegates are
welcome to distribute material, at the seminar reception desk, expressing
their specific interests for developing proposals within this area.
It is sponsored by the Esprit EMMUS project which is providing support for
the design of Multimedia systems, to organisations across Europe.
We are sorry for the short notice. Please try to attend as we intend to
make it a lively and interactive meeting.
COST AND REGISTRATION
To appeal to a wide range of delegates, the cost of seminar has been kept
to a minimum of: 25 for standard registration, 10 for students with a
student ID card. This will include attendance and a free handbook on the
design of multimedia systems (produced by the EMMUS project), and tea and
coffee vouchers for use in the University refectory. Lunch is not included
but can be obtained at low cost also from the University refectory, close
to the seminar location.
Delegates will need to PAY THE REGISTRATION FEE ON ENTRY TO THE SEMINAR
ON
THE DAY. Payment must be in cash or as a cheque made payable to
