Research Fellow in Virtual Environments
Centre for Virtual Environments
University of Salford
Salary : 18k - 20k
Applications are invited for a post of Research Fellow within the Centre
of Virtual Environments at the University of Salford. This EPSRC funded
research post has been established to develop a Virtual Environment for
supporting maintainability assessment during the design of mechanical
products. The applicant will be working closely with an industrial
consortium involving Rolls-Royce Aero-engine, Rolls-Royce & Associates,
British Aerospace, EDS Parasolid and D-Cubed to develop and evaluate
the virtual environment.
This work will build upon the on-going research at the Centre for
Virtual Environment on Interactive Product Simulation Environments and
the Maintenance modelling research within the Department of Aero and
Mechanical Engineering, at the University of Salford. The role of the
applicant will be to improve the existing constraint-based interaction
facilities within the current Product Simulation Environment to assess
maintenance tasks. This research will address a major question
concerning the viability and utility of virtual environments to perform
design analysis on a virtual prototype as realistically as with a
physical prototype.
This post is ideal for a person with a PhD in Computer Science,
Mathematics or in a related discipline. A good knowledge of graphics, VR
and C++ is essential. The salary will be negotiated according to the
qualification.
The Centre of Virtual Environment at Salford University has been
established to develop a focused programme of teaching, research and
technology transfer. The Centre has access to state-of-the-art VR
facilities and VR laboratories (See http://www.salford.ac.uk/cve for
more detail). Recently, the Centre has received 1.6m from JREI to
set-up advanced VR capabilities. New VR facilities will include a CAVE,
Reality Room, Responsive Workbench and an Onyx2 Infinite Reality2 Rack
System. The applicant will have access to these advanced VR facilities
in addition to his/her personal VR set-up to conduct this research. You
will be working with a highly motivated staff and research team within
the Centre.
The closing date for applications is 15th April.
