PERSONAL TECHNOLOGIES AND CHILDREN
A Themed issue of Personal technologies (ISSN 0949-2054, Springer Verlag)

AIMS
This themed issue of Personal Technologies aims to draw together
research on the design use of handheld, mobile and personal systems
for children. Increasingly, the gap between 'business',
'entertainment' and 'communication' technologies is blurring, and new
systems, particularly personal, mobile, portable or handheld systems,
are being used by children in social and educational settings.
Developments in pervasive and ubiquitous computing have the potential
to further blur this boundary. One view of this process is that it
will bring about the possibility of increased access to computers,
increased computer literacy and a more complete integration of
computer technologies into children's lives. Building on previous
contributions to Personal Technologies on topics such as ubiquitous,
pervasive and mobile computing in entertainment, business and
educational contexts, this themed issue of Personal Technologies
seeks to address the rationale, design process, and implications of
personal technologies for children.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Contributions for the issue are sought from researchers, educators
and developers in the following and related areas:
* Child-centred participatory design approaches
* Usability evaluation for children's technologies
* Children's personal technologies for social interaction
* Learning environments for children using personal technologies
* Children's understandings of technology
* Personal technologies and toys
* Developing group-based interactions using personal technologies
In line with the multidisciplinary nature of Personal Technologies,
contributions can originate from computing, social and human
sciences, engineering or educational theory, and can take the form of
empirical studies, position papers, theoretical analyses or
discussions of deployed systems.
DEADLINE
The deadline for contributions is 31 JULY, 1999. Contributions will
be rapidly peer-reviewed by an international panel and will be
published in volume 3 (1999) of Personal Technologies.
FORMAT
Contributions should follow the submission guidelines on the Personal
technologies web site at
http://www.csm.uwe.ac.uk/faculty/cpim/PeTe.html
