'Making User-centred Design Work in Software Development
Colloquium organised by Professional Group A5 (Human interface systems
engineering) and co-sponsored by Professional Group A6 (Systems
Integration), the International Federation for Information Processing,
British Computer Society HCI Specialist Interest Group and the Ergonomics
Society
Tuesday, 23 March 1999 at Savoy Place, London
AIMS AND SCOPE
Building usable HCI (Human computer interaction) into software systems is
increasingly important. With intensifying reliance on software, there is
growing awareness of the economic cost when software is poorly matched to
its users and their tasks.
There is no shortage of proven techniques for specifying and designing
effective HCI, and the field is underpinned by a growing number of
international standards. But in practice it can be hard to integrate
these techniques into full scale developments.
Pressures of time and budget, conflicts with established software
engineering methods or cultural expectations about the development
process, often present challenges for integrating HCI effectively within
development.
Systems still fail to deliver what is expected. Many are rejected,
sometimes spectacularly. In an environment of rapidly changing
technologies, the effective integration of HCI into the whole development
process is crucial to success.
This colloquium will explore the challenges for integrating HCI
effectively within development, such as pressures of time and budget, and
conflicts with cultural expectations about the development process and
software engineering methods. The aim will be to discuss current issues
and progress in
this area, with the focus on exchanging practical ideas and experience,
through contribution and discussion
