SECOND WORKSHOP ON HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION WITH MOBILE DEVICES
31 August 1999, Edinburgh, Scotland
An Interact'99 Workshop
http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/mobile99/
CALL FOR PAPERS
The last 3-4 years have seen the development and marketing of a vast array
of mobile computing devices. These systems herald what we believe to be a
new era of `ubiquitous' computing. The utility of these devices is reduced
by the problems of accessing information resources through tiny displays.
This can be especially problematic where that information is `perishable';
where its value is only relevant to particular locations and times. The
utility of mobile devices is further reduced by the problems of
manipulating miniaturised versions of `standard' keyboards and pointing
devices. Users are also forced to perform numerous, delicate operations by
selecting very small icons. This workshop will provide a forum for
academics and practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential
solutions for effective interaction with mobile systems and builds on the
success of the First Workshop on Human Computer Interaction with Mobile
Devices held in Glasgow in May 1998
(http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~johnson/workshops_old/mobile.html).
The workshop is intended to cover not only PDAs but also voice terminals,
smart phones and laptops.
Papers are invited on, but are not limited to, the following topics:
* visualisation techniques for large data sets on small displays;
* speech input for portable devices;
* evaluations of mobile devices being used in remote/hazardous locations;
* safety issues in the operation of mobile devices;
* case studies of the existing tasks performed by mobile users;
* requirements engineering for location dependent (and location
independent) computing;
* interfaces that support the integration of mobile devices and
telecommunications;
* ergonomics of hand-held devices;
* authoring Web pages for hand-held devices;
* novel screen-based user interfaces for hand held devices;
* screen quality and the success of hand held devices;
* sound in mobile computing devices.
Attendance will be limited in order to encourage interaction. It will be
possible for people to attend the workshop even though they have not
submitted a paper.
DEADLINES
Extended abstracts (3-5 pages) should be sent to the address given below by
31 May 1999 (we have set a tight timetable for reviewing so, unfortunately,
this deadline is absolute). Submission can be electronic (e-mailed URL
reference to a single HTML page or PDF document; or e-mailed PDF or plain
text) or on paper. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 31 July, and
final versions of the papers are due on 14 August. It is our intention to
publish the proceedings of the workshop through a journal route not yet
finalised. For full details see the Workshop Web site at
