EDINA - providing national online services
EDINA is a UK national data centre (see http://edina.ed.ac.uk/). Based at
Edinburgh University Data Library, EDINA is funded by the Joint
Information Services Committee (JISC) of the higher education funding
councils, and forms part of the 'virtual library' for staff and students
in UK higher education.
EDINA - Software Engineer
A software engineer is required to join the EDINA IT Infrastructure Team,
to assist in system support and service maintenance and to contribute to
the design, implementation and maintenance of EDINA national services.

EDINA Digimap - providing online mapping
A key strategic objective is to improve access to spatial data, via the
Internet, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Building on the
Data Library's Digimap project, EDINA is to establish a new national
on-line service for Ordnance Survey digital map data. As a consequence a
number of new posts have arisen.
Software Engineers
We require developers for leading-edge projects to deliver geographic
information via the Internet. These involve developing and implementing
both server-side integration with a leading GIS and
client-side aspects of a web-based service. Ideally you will have sound
experience of UNIX (Sun Solaris), web programming, CGI scripting,
programming in Java or C++ on UNIX and an interest in computer graphics or
spatial data.

GIS Development Officers
We need GIS specialists for the development of new web-based map and
geo-data services, able to undertake large-scale spatial data management
tasks and general GIS development activities. Familiarity with the
concepts and use of one or more major GIS within a UNIX environment and
practical experience of programming in at least one language, for example,
C, C++, Java or Perl would be an advantage.

Geo-data Support Officers
We require key individuals, to provide support to local university staff
involved in institution-level support for users of the service and to
undertake training and produce web-based user-support documentation.
Ideally you will have experience of supporting and training end users in
the use of geo-data or geo-data services, experience in using at least two
desktop GIS packages, and good inter-personal, presentational and
organisational skills. Experience in the use of OS digital map data
and/or paper products is essential for both posts.
