MAX WEBER STUDY GROUP
TENTH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE

September 14th-16th, 1999
University of Derby, England

CALL FOR PAPERS

This year sees the tenth anniversary of the British Sociological Association's Max Weber Study Group, founded in 1989. The Study Group will be holding a special commemorative conference this year at the University of Derby, England. The Study Group enjoys a wide international membership, and in its ten years of life has published several seminal collections of papers and monographs from leading Weber scholars, including, in this past year, Ralph Schroeder's Weber, Democracy and Modernization (Macmillan) and Sam Whimster's edited volume, Weber and the Culture of Anarchy (Macmillan).

The conference will hold four plenary sessions from leading names in Weber studies and twelve specialised sessions following two parallel streams. Themes for the two parallel streams are:

1. Weber in Literary Context/Weber and European Literature

In the light of the cultural-linguistic turn in social science and the growing interest in historical and interpretive approaches to the classics of sociology, we anticipate papers on Weber's literary style, sources and allusions, the role of metaphor in his work, his intellectual and biographical relationships with literary personages and movements in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century European culture.

2. Weber's Legacy for the Twentieth Century and the New Millenium

Responding to recent challenges to the classical tradition and the coming fin de siècle, we anticipate papers on Weber and the theory of modernity, Weber and postmodernism, apocalyptic themes in Weber, Weberian approaches to the social and political transformations of the twentieth century, Weber's heirs today, and the future of Weber studies.

Confirmed speakers so far include:

Lawrence Scaff (Wayne State University)
Richard Jenkins (Sheffield University)
Ralph Schroeder (Chalmers University, Sweden)
Sam Whimster (London Guildhall University)
Thomas Kemple (University of British Columbia)
David Owen (Southampton University)
Jem Thomas (University of West England)
Karl-Ludwig Ay (Munich)
Isher-Paul Sahni (McGill University)
David Chalcraft (Derby University)
Austin Harrington (Derby University)

In addition to our guest speakers, further papers are warmly invited from anyone with a research interest falling generally under our two themes. Prospective contributors are asked to send a title and abstract (max. 200 words), by e-mail or regular post, to the address below, no later than April 30.

The conference will also see the launch of a new journal devoted to scholarship on Weber entitled Max Weber Studies, to be published by Sheffield Academic Press, for which the publishers will hold a reception and display. We anticipate that distinguished papers from the conference will be published either in the first and subsequent issues of the journal or in a separate book collection, or both. A further event at the conference will be a special workshop session to be held by Sam Whimster in which Dr. Whimster will introduce the ESRC-funded Weber letters database which he has recently completed.

The conference will take place on Tuesday 14th September to Thursday 16th September 1999 in attractive new lecture hall premises at the Kedleston Road campus of the University of Derby, England. Conference delegates will be accommodated in fine new university residence halls. The tall university buildings command a pleasant view of the surrounding Derbyshire countryside, and the prosperous Derby city centre is well-known for lively local pubs and restaurants as well as museums and monuments from its industrial heritage in the English Midlands. Derby is easily accessible by rail from London (a two-hour direct journey from St. Pancras station) or road (the M1). Birmingham International Airport, with flight connections to Germany and the U.S.A., is about 50 minutes' rail journey time from Derby.

We very much look forward to seeing you.
