I, err, received this message today and thought I'd pass it on for
people to do with what they will. I haven't investigated it personally,
you understand. :-) Maybe it's the only thing that can save VRML. :-)

Subject: Internet's First VR Sex Community Launches

To Rob Ingram:
We thought both yourself and the UK VR-SIG would be
interested in knowing about our current VR project. Included below is our
official press release. XRave has been up for one week and has already begun
to develop a
consistent community of recurrent users. It's our hope that we can help
VRML's visibility on the web and prove its commercial viability. XRave is
and will be a continually evolving site, with personlized avatars and a more
streamlined chat ability on the way in the coming months.

Thanks for you attention,

Anthony Kyle Monday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BERKELEY INTERACTIVE DESIGN RELEASES XRAVE™
THE FIRST MULTI-USER VIRTUAL REALITY SEX CLUB
"The libidinous maze of fetish-targeted chat alcoves, naughty images, sound
effects, and adult stories is the first 3-D virtual world to exclusively
target adult users with sybaritic intentions."
--Wired News, February 11, 1998, Joyce Slaton
http://www.wired.com/news/news/culture/story/17849.html
BERKELEY, CA Feb. 11, 1999 - Announcing the release of Berkeley Interactive
Design’s 3D adult-oriented community, XRave, located at
http://www.xrave.com. The Web's first 3D sex club, XRave™ is an immersive
virtual reality environment full of erotically-charged sex.bots,
techno-music, chat rooms and an endless supply of adult-oriented images,
stories and spatialized sound-effects.
Developed by the Virtual Reality Laboratory of new media production firm
Berkeley Interactive Design (http://www.berkeleyidesign.com) and its roster
of avant-garde writers, musicians and VR architects, XRave's™ fully-rendered
3D storyworld creates a unique social environment guaranteed to stir up
controversy in the Net culture.
"XRave™ radically reconfigures our understanding of what human sexuality on
the Net can be," says company CEO Caroline E. White. "Our immediate aim is
to create a 3D Webspace for erotic play that is more compelling than the
traditional sex industry with its 'GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!' aesthetic. With
XRave™, we’re showing people that the future of online sex is more
community-oriented; there are lots of ‘hot chat’ sites, but what seems to
be lacking at the present moment is the establishment of interest-based
communities. This is what makes XRave unique in the world of Web erotica.”

Created to be an adaptable virtual environment, XRave™ is enriched with an
archive of over 3.5GB of X-rated photographs and art, volumes of erotic
fiction, and hours of original techno, trip-hop and ambient music created by
XRave's™ own DJ-X, Misery and The Lotus Eaters.
"We’ve designed a 3D space,” says VRML architect Jay Dillemuth, "that
functions both as a compelling social environment, and also as a new way to
organize the vast amount of data in our archives. There are nearly half a
million erotic images at XRave™ which have been hand sorted into more than
500 categories, all easily accessed via the various Raves, Chill Rooms and
Libraries. This is a web-interface that is as revoluntionary as it is
stimulating. XRave™ is the only community on the Web where fetish
afficianados from all over the world and of all sexual persuasions can
congregate in an environment designed to encourage creative role-playing.”

The main Rave areas include the Straight Rave, the Gay Rave, the Dyke Rave
and the Fetish Rave, all of which are presented in a never-before-seen 3D
interface that exploits the potential of the Web to create more engaging
social experiences for interactive sex enthusiasts worldwide.
Berkeley Interactive Design specializes in the production of
state-of-the-art 3D storyworlds for Internet distribution. The company's
first web project, Holo-X™ (http://www.holo-x.com), made in conjunction with
the Alt-X® Online Network (http://www.altx.com), was released in December
and became an immediate success. The day Holo-X™ was released, The New York
Times said: "it offers a fascinating glimpse at the future of hypertext" and
Wired News announced that it was time to, "[m]ove over, Lara Croft and Kyoko
Date, a new virtual vixen is in town...the Sorceress of Language in
Uncharted Technologies, aka S.L.U.T., the saucy, green-haired star of Holo-X."
Interested visitors to the site are invited to take advantage of a special
promotional offer giving free admission to the site during the first week of
launch. And throughout the month of February, limited free passes will be
given out to those who can correctly answer the daily erotic trivia question.
To experience the full potential of XRave™, the Cosmo Player 2.1 plug-in
(VRML browser) and the current version of Netscape Navigator must be
installed.
