Dear All
During the course of the SUSCAG meeting last Friday we
discussed ideas for collaborative projects under the new UK
Research Libraries Support Strategies Funding Programme.
The following details (also included in the minutes, but
repeated here in case anyone didn't manage to get that
far!) are ideas that were developed during the course of
the afternoon. While a joint SUSCAG bid was considered to
be a good idea, it was agreed that bids developed by
smaller groups of SUSCAG members could also have a great
deal of potential. We are asking members to submit further
ideas based on the themes developed during the meeting,
with regard to their own collections, by Monday 22 February
(yes, next Monday!!), so please read on if you require full
details.

Extract from the minutes of the meeting of SUSCAG 12
February 1999, Glasgow School of Art.
The following themes were those identified as popular with
those members present and feasible to develop further. I
have included details of initial ideas raised during the
discussion:
EDUCATION
Glasgow University will co-ordinate. Contact Moira Rankin,

We all have Education in common, and to narrow it down
Scottish Higher Education was suggested. This could cover
Institutions' own records, and demonstrate their great
research value.
Ideas:
· Build on the TFPL report to pilot and implement
collections guidelines for a classification scheme of
University records
· The history of education could link to cross sectoral
bids, eg with Edinburgh City Archive
· The modern angle is also important - eg 1960s
institutions
ART AND DESIGN
Glasgow School of Art will co-ordinate. Contact Clare
McGread, e-mail:[log in to unmask]
Ideas:
· Collaboration with the V&A, London Institutes
· Glasgow Year of Design and Architecture - collaboration
opportunity?
· Incorporate, if possible, textile records, both of
institutional and deposited collections
HISTORY OF SCIENCE
Edinburgh University will co-ordinate. Contact Arnott
Wilson, e-mail: [log in to unmask]
Ideas:
· The history of medicine could be included in this section
- Joe Fodey and others are going to a meeting at the
Wellcome Institute next week which will focus on printed
material, and will report back to SUSCAG if any relevant
discussions arise
ARCHITECTURE
Dundee University will co-ordinate. Contact Pat Whatley,
e-mail: [log in to unmask]
Ideas:
· Study of Architectural records as a source for the
development of Institutions
· Deposited records of architectural practices
· Records of teaching and research in architecture and
planning
GAELIC MATERIAL
Co-ordinator still to be decided.
Ishbel Barnes pointed out that the School of Scottish
Studies have submitted a HLF bid for linking Scottish
Gaelic oral and written history (printed material).
SOUND RESOURCES
Co-ordinator still to be decided.
Sound recordings are specifically mentioned in Annex A
section F.2.2.13.
Ideas:
· Music, printed music
· Oral history
· Sound recordings
LAND USE AND LAND DEVELOPMENT
Co-ordinator still to be decided.
Ideas:
· This theme would cover family and estate records etc.
(see Annex A, section F/2/2/4)
· Local studies could possibly attract cross-sectoral
involvement eg. Health - bringing in the city archives.
POLITICS / SCOTTISH NATIONALISM
Stirling University will co-ordinate: Contact: Gordon
Willis, e-mail: [log in to unmask]
Ideas:
· Pamphlets
· Student politics
· Nationalism
· Political parties
TOURISM
Napier University will co-ordinate: Contact Graeme Forbes,
e-mail: [log in to unmask]
Ideas:
· 20th century Scottish tourism / heritage management
· This theme could involve cross-sectoral bids, for example
the National Trust for Scotland (which is a member of
SUSCAG).
ACTION
If anyone wishes to be involved in any of these bids please
e-mail the appropriate co-ordinator with your ideas by
Monday 22 February. Interested parties should submit
information to the co-ordinators along the lines suggested
in Annexe A section E point 1 and 2 also indicating
approximate size of the collection (linear metres).
Consider all media; photos, video, sound etc. Individual
co-ordinators will then decide if a further meeting is
required. All bids need to demonstrate tangible research
benefit, therefore we will need to develop these themes in
consultation with academic colleagues and researchers.
It is now 5 weeks to the bid - (19 March) so we must move
fast!
It was generally agreed that it is important that we share
any other ideas we are working on in order to avoid
unnecessary duplication. We could also state in our bids
that we will be willing to merge with other similar bids.
