There are content and lexical analysis facilties with the SphinxSurvey
program which also provides a wide range of statistical analyses -
both of which can interface to SPSS. Take a look at;

"An Introduction to SphinxSurvey"
Central London, Friday, February 19th, 1999
"SphinxSurvey is exceptionally easy to use, both to design
questionnaires and in analyzing their results... and is a pleasure to
use." - Dr Steve Jefferys, Department of Human Resource Management and
Industrial Relations, Keele University
"SphinxSurvey is a very practical tool. We use it for all our
occasional surveys, appreciating its user-friendliness and the manner
in which it integrates all necessary functions." - Thierry Huron,
Research and Marketing Manager, Mo_t and Chandon
"Survey design and analysis is simple and effective with SphinxSurvey.
I find the way in which it combines quantitative and qualitative
analysis particularly useful in my domain." - Alexandre Kurc,
Professor of Social Psychology, University of Nancy II
The SphinxSurvey software program is the integrated, one-stop software
program for the design, administration, processing and analysis of
surveys. With the enhanced capabilities of SphinxSurvey Lexica you can
now even analyze the qualitative (textual) data from open-ended
questions. SphinxSurvey is used by both academic and commercial
researchers, by postgraduates and by undergraduate students in a wide
range of sectors including: Marketing, Human Resources, Quality
Assurance/Assessment, Social Research, Health, Education and
Psychology. The program's integration of functions and ease of use
saves time and money. Even with little statistical or research
training you can quickly design questionnaires, collect responses,
check and examine data, and generate a report with a minimum of time
and effort. SphinxSurvey Plus_ and SphinxSurvey Lexica will help you
perform all the basic stages of a questionnaire survey, supporting:
Straightforward questionnaire design

we tested TextSmart Version 1.1 and we would suggest that the
automatic generation of categories can be problematic:
The program builds categories by means of cluster analysis
based on single words and lemmas (grouped as alias).
The quality of these automatically built categories depends on
on how good the stop word list and the own alias lists are.
We have found out that one has to invest a lot of time to build
'meaningful' stop word and alias lists. Furthermore, even
if one has invested a lot of effort in doing this, it is not
easy to interpret the meaning of the generated categories.
However, one can switch off this functionality and build one's own
categories manually (always based on words or aliases).
We found the manual very good, and as far as the implementation is
concerned, version 1.1 is more stable and faster than version 1.0, but
still
not fast enough.
If you are interested, our review should be made public some time next
month.
Hope this helps.
