Harriet,
It isn't always easy to convince those steeped in the scientific
method of research of the value of more subjective research! You
may find it helpful to look at several people writing on Grounded
Theory in order to help you find a path suitable for you and your
research. I notice someone has already mentioned Strauss &
Corbin; I would suggest in addition a very useful chapter written by
Kathy Charmaz (Smith JA, Harre R and Van Langenhove L (Eds)
(1995), Rethinking Methods in Psychology, London: Sage Chapter
3 pp27-49).
