I don't think that we were ever given any contra-indications to using TENS.
There were some minor cautions, ie skin irritation/pacemaker if near open
skin, etc). Some have suggested that you might have to worry about
stimulating and affecting a spontaneous abortion. Nothing that would
indicate a problem with a CA patient.
The Codetron TENS machine was developed by Dr. Bruce Pomeranz
(MD/PhD/LAc)and it is used alot with cancer patients. The machine was
developed to try to avoid habituation that occurs with E-stim. It has 6
pads and both the site and frequencies are random(within a set range). There
is a Practitioner model for the clinic and a patient model that you can set
for the patient to take home. Dr Linda Rapson M.D. did a clinical trial for
a patient with terminal pancreatic CA and was able to allow the patient to
use minimal meds until very progressed. I think that if you contact the
Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (website) that someone there can
give you a list/access to relevant references.
Cheers, Ross. (CAFCI)
