In the UK there are numerous vacancies from skilled PTs the only drawback is
you have to accept the pitiful salary scale provided by the NHS. Why have so
many foreigners been attracted to the USA because better salaries are paid
over there. A friend working in the states suggests that some areas actually
prefer UK trained Physios as they do the whole job, respiratory, mobilisation,
gait re-ed etc. in a holistic manner.
The skills issue of training PTAs in specialist area is in the UK too.
Realistically we accept that the Health service will never provide the
physiotherapy service needed by the population. As all healthcare professinals
extend their roles, e.g. orthopaedic practitioner roles previously carried out
by doctors etc., who then takes over less skilled PT roles? Here in the UK we
have to fight to ensure that physio is considered in strategic level, that we
are working in partnership with social services, education and leisure
services to meet the needs of the population - not just what patients or
insurance schemes will pay.
There is work here, but it may be a culture shock!
