Subject: Guidelines for use of suction in the community ?
Date: Wednesday, February 10, 1999 10:33AM
Hi everybody
we do suction for all kinds of chest cases required , in our hospital.
Of course its basically nursing care and needs practice and skill. It
really helps done post physicaltherapy for those with disturbed cough
reflex and in infants suffering from different chest problems.

I work in the Community with patients who have ongoing physical disability.
Is anyone able to direct me towards some guidelines for the use of suction
by carers (family or other care staff) ? I'm thinking more of the oral
hygiene sort of suction to remove pooled secretions at the back of the
throat rather than nasopharyngeal or suction via a tracheostomy, but any
guidelines would be welcome please as there seems to be an increased
tendency out there for everyone to say "no, we don't do that" !
Thanks
