There are two scales developed by Gunnar Borg, a psychophysician at the
University of Stockholm, Sweden. They are both developed in order to rate
the effort during exercise. The RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) was
described in Borg's thesis in 1961. He found that the ratings of exertion
correlated with HR and lactate in healthy people. The scale is a 15-graded
scale 6 to 20, and there are added descriptive words to the numbers. The
other scale is a scale from 0-10 also with descriptive words (Borg's
Category Scale). You can read about those two scales in several articles. I
can give you one reference Borg.G: Psychophysical bases of perceived
exertion. Med.Sci.Sports.Exer. 1982; 14:377-81.
I have seen the RPE scale being used in several reports about postpolio
syndome. Myself I have applied the RPE-scale in research of fibromyalgia
and tolerance from exercise. I also know that the RPE scale is applied in
the clinics in order to prescribe an appropriate exercise intesity.
