The White Hart stood in the Haymarket, Leicester. It was an old
coaching inn, demolished in the late-1960's.
G'day fellow listmembers....
In view of the immediate and helpful response to my Rotherhithe query - I
am now hitting the list with a new one :-
The background is :- 40 letters written between 1828 and 1832 from a
commercial traveller in haberdashery, to his head office in Watling Street
London, which I have written up into a 100 page book. (unpublished - no
interest - not economically viable!)
He mentions in most of the letters where he is going to stay, and where
they should send his samples, to be there when he arrives. So, my query is
how many of these inns are still standing and/or still in the same
business, and are there any postcards or photos available.
BATH The Greyhound
BRISTOL White Hart/ The Rummer/ also...'Mr Woods address will always find
me'(1829)
BIRMINGHAM Neilson Hotel, The George
DERBY Kings Head
LEEDS The White Horse
LEICESTER White Hart
KIDDERMINSTER The White Lion
LONDON White Horse, Cripplegate, Swann Lad Lane, and possibly, are
these three also London (?) Blossoms Inn - and Cross Keys - Black Lion,
Water Lane
CHELTENHAM The Fleece
DUDLEY The Hotel
GLOUCESTER The Ram Inn
NOTTINGHAM White Lyon
SHEFFIELD The Angel
SHREWSBURY The Fox
WORCESTER The Bell
YORK Mr Atkins in South Parade
WARWICK the Woolpack.
There is also an intriguing reference at COVENTRY for the goods to be sent
"Per Bache's Boat", which seems to be a reference to a canal barge?? But
I could find no reference in the research I did over here - plenty about
the actual canal building etc, but nothing about the boats being used.
If any list members know anything about any of these I would be really
pleased to hear of them. Scanned images would be terrific - but this would
have to be offlist
Thanks in advance
