Thanks for the responses to the photographs of Middlestown school in the
1950s.
My students (or fellow learners!) have completed their personal
evaluations using photographs past and present and it has been one of
the most enjoyable pedagogic experiences I have been involved with.
I showed them the ideas and comments from the list and with other
readings - from a book just coming out, Silence in the Classroom edited
by Ian Grosvenor, Kate Rousmaniere (of this list) and Martin Lawn and
extracts from Jon Prosser's Image based Research - they constructed
their own responses.
Three of the students decided to ask current pupils at the same school -
Middlestown - what their reactions were to the past photos. They
recorded these responses and used these as summarising captions in a
photo display juxtaposing present and past images.
Another student - also, remember, employed as a teacher-assistant in
the school - decided to give the children a camera and her display is
formed from the results of this exercise where the children were
encouraged to photograph 'special' places for them in the school
building or play ground.
Another carried out a survey among members of staff, past and present
pupils exploring reactions and responses to the photographs we have
looked at.
One other student, also a teacher assistant, discovered in her own
school - yet more photos in the cupboards - this time capturing scenes
in the early 1960s. She has chosen to juxtapose these with her photos of
the same space today. She also uncovered some clippings about the school
in the 1960s showing children writing on the walls The newspaper story
goes on to expand on this new teaching technique - showing a photo of a
child doing just that!
I suppose i could scan this photo and add it to our collection if any
one is interested ?
Interesting stuff!
