Dear Colleagues,
SOCIOLOGY IN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION SCHOOS OF EUROPE:CALL FOR
WORKSHOP PARTICIPATION
Generally, professional sociology organizations pre-occupy themselves with
academic sociology and research and overlook the important role that
sociology (using sociology in a broader sense to also include social and
cultural anthropology) could play in the lower levels of education.
Usually, sociology is taught in the context of social science subjects in
the elemementary level and as an elective in the secondary level. The
so-called "positive" sciences (physics, mathematics, etc) and the "clasical"
subjects (e.g. history, language etc) always react to proposals of sociology
practicioners that the social sciences and sociology also be incorporated in
the general compulsory education, core curriculum. This means that
overwhelming number of students who may not enroll in higher education
institutions or who may follow other than social science fields during their
higher education careers will not have any exposure to sociology and its
insights. These insights are very crucial and could increase the social
competence of youth, especially in the context of the complex multicultural
European societies, which present youth with may social problems but also
with challenges. In other words, the systematic incorporation of sociology
in lower levels of education could also "make Europe work" better. The
workshop could deal with the assessement of the present situation in
European countries and also with proposals (including suggestions for
curriculum development) for improving the situation.
Colleagues interested in participating in a workshop with the above
problematic, and in the context of the forthcoming ESA conference in
Amsterdam (18-21 August 1999)and with the general theme, "Will Europe
Work", please get in touch me by electronic mail ([log in to unmask] or
[log in to unmask]). I would like to have a response as soon as possible
(by Feb 12) as I have to inform the Conference Committee regarding the
feasibility of such a workshop.
Sincerely yours,
Nicholas P. Petropoulos
