European Sociological Association (ESA)
4th European Conference of Sociology: "Will Europe Work"
Amsterdam, August 18 - 21, 1999
Call for Papers:
Open Stream "Social Reporting on Europe"
Convenors:
Jonathan Gershuny (University of Essex), Heinz-Herbert Noll (ZUMA,
Mannheim)
In recent years social reporting activities - efforts to monitor and
systematically describe and analyse the current state of and changes in
living conditions and the quality of life - have become more and more
popular and have been given new priority. Obviously the process of
European integration has stimulated the development of such monitoring
and reporting activities not only at the supranational, but also at
national and subnational levels. The Maastricht treaty - for example -
includes the requirement to establish regular European social reporting.
The availability of appropriate knowledge and systematic information on
social conditions within and across European societies as provided by
social monitoring and reporting will be of crucial importance to enhance
European integration and cohesion and to create the "Social Europe" of
the 21st century. To meet these information demands and to
systematically improve the available information base are challenges not
only for statistical institutes but also for academic empirical social
research. The open stream on "Social Reporting on Europe" will provide
an opportunity to present and discuss research activities and results
related to this topic and bring together scholars from different
research environments such as academic research institutes, statistical
offices or supranational organizations. Among the subjects to be
covered, the following seem to be particularly interesting and
important:
- Ongoing social reporting activities at the supranational, national or
subnational level; cross-national comparative studies would be
particularly appropriate;
- Comprehensive reports, domain reports, group reports;
- Comprehensive or domain specific social indicator systems;
- Conceptual frameworks for social reporting such as quality of life,
human development, sustainable development, social exclusion or
inclusion etc.;
- Welfare measurement and quality of life research;
- Social reporting methodology;
- Use of quality of life surveys, time-diary, life history and household
panel data for systematic social reporting;
- Construction of quality of life indices;
- Monitoring of welfare state institutions;
- Role and use of social monitoring and reporting in politics;
Abstracts of proposed papers should not exceed 250 words and be written
in good English. Abstracts have to be submitted to both convenors as
well as to the ESA-Secretariat (http://www.qub.ac.uk/esa/siswo.htm). The
deadline for submitting proposals will be February 15, 1999. Authors of
accepted proposals will be informed up to March 15.
