Speakers to address issues of the reflection of political context and/or
personal experience in art taken from a range of modern periods, media and
regions. Questions about the expression of imperial, state, religious or
commercial authority, military standards, 'victory', 'loss', 'opposition'
and 'allegiance', to be juxtaposed with those concerning subjective
response, inner convictions. The talks will be illustrated by slides and
films.
It is hoped that the conference will be accompanied by a small exhibition
of work, on the theme of 'Memories and Reflections', by the Latvian
sculptor
Zigfrids Sapietis
To coincide with the conference there will be a performance of 'Black Bread
& Cucumber', the one-woman tour-de-force and dramatic display of Russian
passion, by RSC and 'Return of the Jedi' actress Caroline Blakiston.
