APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTINGS

Active Learning 9, with the theme Technologies for Lifelong
Learning, explores the contribution to lifelong learning
made by developments in the use of technologies for
learning and teaching in higher education. A special
section presents discussion papers and a summary of the
debates from the ALT-C 98 conference Lifelong Learning on a
Connected Planet.
The challenges of the 'Learning Age' demand a new approach
to learning. We cannot offer everybody a place to study for
a university degree, but we can make available the
expertise we have acquired – particularly in the
development and use of learning technologies – in the
service of further and continuing education. This issue of
Active Learning looks at a range of digital technologies
from email to virtual reality and considers how they can
extend learning opportunities. In each case the authors
show that it is the imagination of teachers and the
positive engagement of students which enable technology to
be used for constructive learning.
Active Learning, the refereed journal of the CTI, is
published twice a year and is the leading refereed journal
dealing with learningtechnologies for the UK Higher
Education community. Each issue centres on a specific theme
and includes academic papers, case studies and opinions, as
well as reviews, conference reports, activity updates and
an events diary. Subscriptions are available free to
academic staff members of higher education institutions
funded by HEFCE, SHEFC, HEFCW or DENI. Please fill in and
