John, your inconstancy is worrisome. First, you ask that the list members
open a dialogue about intellectual disabilities, instead of our continuing
our presumed hypostatic focus on physical disabilities. Then, when someone
offers a cogent and meaningful response aimed directly at our
co-constructional efforts to understand the signifying features of all
disabilities, including those of the intellectual variety, you say, Don't
bother; it relates to nothing. It is "certainly of no help to us at the
coalface."
What would you have us do: appreciate your coal-mining work from afar,
without getting involved in the management, the method, the need for change
in the use of coal? At times, the academic --however personally involved in
the topic of study--needs to separate the agony from the analysis. Can you
do this, without attacking 'management' for failing to 'get their hands
dirty'? Can you contribute to the knowledge base, rather than strip-mining
for the quickest results?
Dona
