I do not want to go off the topic too far, but do want to bring an
announcement into my answer. As sean has posed the question of the
relationship between disability studies and rehabilitation science (
interesting you called it a science and not studies), i also will pose the
question as to the relationship between disability studies and cultural
studies, deaf studies, women studies, queer studies, economic
inequality-liberation studies etc. It is an important set of questions
wanting to be answered as disability studies emerges as a credible and
attractive resources to students, scholars and disabled people, well maybe
not yet to disabled people some RE -search might need to be done as to
what benefits disabled people directly, by asking them in their lives
about the impact of the various aspects of disability studies, and then
about the impact of rehabilitation too......
I have previously argued that small case disability ( or impairment ) is
to upper case Disability as sex is to gender ( I ve changed my ideas
several times in between then and now) but I would say in GENERl THAT
DISABILITY STUDIES (Sorry caps locked) is the GENDER to the SEX OF THE
REHABILTIATION STUDIES. wOMEN STUDIES scholars and advocates do not want
research on breast cancer stopped because most of womens inequality is not
based on biology and neither do they want to remove their influence from
the medical sciences that look into womens issues. Quite the contrary
womens studies needs to have a balancing influence so as to ensure the
validty and effectiveness of medical resaerach on and for women as
subjects and objects.
>I digress lo siento! ( im using a spanish keyboard)
I do think most disbaility studies researchers and writers want to KNOW
what is happening in rehabiltiative science and some not all want to have
INPUT into what research or studies get approved or conducted so that we
can have a consumer driven or at least disability studies perspective (
also known as independent living philosophy) inserted into rehab.
however, i do think they are DIFFERENT pools, ponds, streams, areas that
need to be considered independently but also should seek to have
interaction and healthy collaboration ( not cooptation). I disagree
strongly with occupational health and rehab medical model progams
starting to call themselves disability studies.
