Last week I was asked to make our list of "TOP33 MARC elements" available
in English, and by e-mail, since access to our Web address is sometimes
slow. The original report is at
www.biblio.tu-bs.de/allegro/formate/formneu.htm
Here goes:
TOP33 USMARC elements with DC concordance
-----------------------------------------
Over 4 Million records of the Library of Congress were evaluated as
of Dec. 1997.
Follows the list of those elements that occurred in at least
1% of the records - that's a mere 33 elements!
Corresponding DC element names are given where possible. There may be
a correspondence in most cases, one has to observe, however, that the
semantics are not really nicely compatible. Conversion both ways will
never be quite satisfactory, being very far from a 1:1 correspondence.

The 'Z' means "reliability", in the sense that "if this element is
relevant for the publication, then it will be entered".
DC.FORMAT would correspond to USMARC 516 "Type of computer file"
which, however, had not been used yet by LC.
The Type of File is sometimes hidden in 538 "System details note" ,
which is a textual note category and thus not standardized. There are only
574 occurrences anyway. LC had not yet cataloged many Epublications
by the end of 1996.
