NATIONAL STUDENTS & YOUTH DAY OF ACTION
In Defense Of Affirmative Action:
***************************************
FEBRUARY 24
***************************************
The national day of action is three weeks away and quickly
approaching. New emails from campuses from around the country are coming
in every day. Momentum is definitely building.
February 24, 1999 marks the one-year anniversary of the movement to
defend affirmative action taking on a national character. The first
national day of action a year ago included only two schools - UC
Berkeley and the University of Michigan. Since then, the last two
nationally coordinated actions have mobilized thousands of students in
dozens of states across the country. The October 21 & 22 Days of Action
that University of California system professors initiated were a great
success that helped draw more people into the movement. In October,
actions happened across the country. Students have initiated the Day of
Action on February 24. It is an opportunity to organize, educate, and
take action on as large a scale as possible. It is an opportunity to say
- we are drawing a line in the sand against the attack on affirmative
action.
A STRONG FIRST YEAR
In its first year the movement has accomplished a great deal. From
its base on college campuses, the movement has taken the first steps to
broaden out to high schools and surrounding communities. What is needed
is mass social struggle and organization - a new, mass civil rights
movement; we are headed in that direction.
Recently, the Center for Individual Rights, which has spearheaded
the attack on affirmative action in the courts nationwide, put ads in 14
college papers soliciting assistance from white racist students and
encouraging anti-affirmative action lawsuits. The target of the attack
has been broadened to include the inadequate progress toward integration
in K-12 education secured by the Civil Rights Movement. The active
support for racism in the courts is not mirrored in society at large.
There is no popular movement against affirmative action.
A broadening of sympathy for the movement in defense of affirmative
action in the American public and an increasing sense of the necessity
of active resistance to the attack on affirmative action has developed
over the last year. More people understand the far-reaching significance
of this attack. This rise in consciousness has opened opportunities for
the movement.
For example, the movement faces its greatest opportunity to
overturn the attack on affirmative action in the state of California
now. The movement in California has the chance now to pressure the new
Democratic governor into appointing enough UC Regents to make the
overturn of the Regents decision a real possibility.
Over the last year the movement has grown in size, strength and
consciousness. The number of people who consciously identify themselves
as part of the movement has steadily risen. A new layer of leaders has
begun to step forward, young women and men who are proud to stand in the
tradition of the fight for equality.
Having defeated the attack on affirmative action, the opportunity
will present itself to launch a much-needed counteroffensive against the
racist inequality and segregation and the sexism that pervade this
society. We must clear away the obstacles to building a successful
defense. The marches, meetings, and rallies of today will be a pole of
attraction for broader sections of the population tomorrow.
