Proposals are currently being accepted for the 4th Northumbria
Assessment conference to be held at the University of Northumbria,
Newcastle upon Tyne from 1-3rd September, 1999.
The focus of this international conference is on assessment of student
learning in universities and colleges. We particularly wish to
encourage the exchange of perspectives on current issues in assessment
contributed by delegates from a variety of countries.
Seminars and workshop contributions are invited from those who wish to
report on research, development and innovation in assessment, review
assessment practices, offer issue or problem-focused sessions. All
sessions will be 50 minutes in length.
THEMES
The theme of this year’s conference is:
ASSESSMENT FOR THE LEARNING SOCIETY
Papers are invited in relation to the following topics:
1. Promotion of a lifelong learning society
· Assessment to ensure that learners acquire and achieve standards of
knowledge and competence · Assessment to transmit appropriate norms
and values
2. Assessment to promote lifelong learning skills
· Critical thinking
· Creative thinking
· Self-evaluation, self-direction
· Information skills
· Interpersonal skills
3. Assessment to open up access to learning
· APEL
· “Just in time” assessment
· Equitable assessment
4. Assessment suited to new forms of curricula for lifelong learning ·
Problem-based learning · Reflective practice · Use of information and
communication technologies
Other topics relevant to the themes of the conference are welcome

Assistant Project Manager of SAPHE (Self-Assessment in Professional

Professor Freda Tallantyre, Faculty of Education, University of Derby,

WORKSHOP DAY
There will be an optional “developing assessment” workshop day
(Tuesday, 31st August - Wednesday, 1st September, 1999), led by
Professor Phil Race.
