Abstract
This talk explains and illustrates the use of problem frames in problem
structuring and analysis. Traditionally, software engineering has
concentrated on the solutions we build rather than the problems they are
intended to solve. Widespread recognition that many well-publicised
disasters stem from inadequate requirements suggests that we must
strengthen our ability in problem analysis. In this talk the idea of a
problem frame is illustrated by some elementary problems. Problem frames
are based on analysis and structuring of the environment, and can help to
identify issues and difficulties arising in typical problems that fit each
frame. Individually, these elementary problem frames are far too simple to
fit any realistic problem. But realistic problems are compositions of
elementary problems. Practical problem analysis and structuring is based on
recognising the elementary frames characterising the subproblems of which a
realistic problem is composed. This composition itself raises fresh issues
and difficulties, both in analysing problems and in constructing solutions.
Identifying these difficulties, and developing a standard repertoire of
techniques to overcome them, is the classic process by which traditional
engineering disciplines and their products become mature and reliable.
