'COMMUNITY OF THE FUTURE'
CALL FOR ENTRIES
.....................................................................
The i3net Research Theatre
October 21-23,1999, Edinburgh (Scotland)
'COMMUNITY OF THE FUTURE'
New visions of information technology products in everyday life
http://www.i3net.org/cof
The 'Community of the Future' event envisions new information technology
scenarios that have the potential to empower ordinary people in every day
activities.
The event is styled in the form of a research theatre and proposals are
invited from research groups all over the world for any of the three
components:'live performances', 'piazza' and 'underground'. We expect this
novel format to result in creative communication and lively interactions among
the multi-disciplinary audience.
L I V E P E R F O R M A N C E S
Performances on the stage may involve team members, users, the audience or
others. Concrete pragmatic scenarios based on scientific research as well as
poetic, philosophical or other forms of creative interpretations are also
welcome. Proposers are encouraged to employ creative formats from the
performing arts fields.

Proposers may also set up models or working demos of their products in the
piazza under any of these thematic areas:
@home - products for use at home
time out - entertainment and leisure
street smart - products in public spaces and
booo!! - a special section for young children
The concept design for the piazza will be developed jointly with the selected
proposers. A limited number of relevant commercial products may also be
demonstrated. The piazza is likely to be open to general public and press for
a limited time during the event.
U N D E R G R O U N D
Controversial and provocative topics may be debated at the underground cafe. A
few selected proposals will be scheduled before hand while the audience may
organise other topics on an impromptu basis.
S U B M I S S I O N S
Proposals are due for submission latest by May 15, 1999 and selected
proposers will be informed by end of June 1999. The selection criteria and
full details for submission will be available at the web site shortly.
All proposals will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary programme committee
representing the fields of computer technology, design, performing arts,
sociology, education and policy making.
Note for i3net members :
------------------------
All i3net project entries for the 'piazza' will be accepted. However, entries
for 'live performances' and 'underground' will be subject to the selection
process along with the non-i3net entries. During the event, EC reviewers will
hold annual review sessions with individual i3net projects behind closed doors
like last year.
T H E O R G A N I S E R S
i3net is the Research Network for Intelligent Information Interfaces
(http://www.i3net.org) consisting of 26 research projects funded by European
Commission ESPRIT research programme to the tune of about 75 million Euros.
More than 100 organisations represented by 300 odd researchers constitute the
i3net community.
The goal of i3net is to set and promote a research agenda for developing
human-centered information technology products for every day tasks for
ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds. i3net strives to achieve this
through a number of activities aimed at facilitating interactions among a wide
range of multi-disciplinary researchers with an interest in human computer
interaction, computer-supported cooperative work, art and design,
communications technology, sociology and other related areas.
