Postgraduate Research in
VETERINARY MEDICINE and VIRTUAL REALITY
at the University of Glasgow, UK
Deadline for applications: 28/February/1999
http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~stephen/research.shtml#haptic
The Department of Computing Science is working with the Faculty of
Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow to develop Vrirtual
Reality (VR) based tools to train vet students. The University of Glasgow
has a commitment to the implementation of non-invasive procedures for
diagnostic and education purposes in Veterinary Medicine. As part of the
continued development in the use of technology in veterinary education
(e.g. ultrasonographic facilities, collation of electronic archival
materials) VR is now being explored as a possible aid to teaching and in
particular to replace invasive examination procedures. In particular we are
using state-of-the-art haptic (also known as force-feedback or touch)
technology for training (http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~stephen/vets).
Our initial work has been to investigate the effects of training using
haptic models (based around the Phantom force-feedback device from SensAble)
of animal organs. The results have been very promising so we are now looking
for this work to be developed further by a PhD student.
This project will involve the designing, building and testing of 3D models
and tools for training vet students - no knowledge of veterinary medicine
will be required at this stage! The student will work with vets to
understand the problems of examination, model surface properties of organs,
build
and then test the models to assess their effectiveness. Work in this area
also has many possibilities in a general medical context.
Students interested this area can apply for a 3 year fully-funded PhD
studentship in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to be based in the
Department of Computing Science. Anyone interested should contact Dr Stephen
Brewster in the Department of Computing Science. Applications are due in ***
by the end of February, 1999 ***. Applicants should have (or expect to get)
a first or upper second class degree. If you are interested in the post then
please contact Dr Brewster as soon as possible.
Skills
Ideally, a candidate will have some or all of the following skills:
. Have, or hope to get, a 2i or 1st class degree in computing science
. Knowledge of Human-Computer Interaction
. C++/object oriented programming skills
The Department Of Computing Science
The Department of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow is one of
the best in the country, gaining one of the coveted 5* awards in the last
research assessment exercise. We have a very active programme of research
which covers a broad range of topics including: communications, distributed
systems, formal methods, graphics and interactive systems, information
retrieval, operating systems and persistent systems.
Glasgow Interactive Systems Group (GIST)
The student on this project will be working in the internationally renowned
GIST group. GIST is an inter-disciplinary research group based at Glasgow
University investigating all aspects of interactive systems from graphics,
to sounds, from User Interface Management Systems to the psychology of
interaction and formal specifications of user interfaces. We are one of the
biggest and most active Human-Computer Interaction research groups within
the UK. For more information read the GIST web pages at
