ESA CONFERENCE IN AMSTERDAM: AUGUST 1999.
EUROPEAN SOCIAL POLICY RESEARCH NETWORK.
Panel on THE GLOBAL DIMENSION OF EU SOCIAL POLICY.
In common with other research streams we are extending the call for abstracts for papers that address the above topic.
Paper proposals are still being invited for topics which fall under this heading.
The logic of the panel is to explore the extent to which the social policy of the EU as articulated by DG5 is reflected in the external dimension of the EU. The external dimension embraces trade and investment, technical assistance through Phare and Tacis, humanitarian work through ECHO, other development assistance, foreign policy and the contribution of the EU to G7, World Bank, WTO and allied bodies. How far is and should the EU in all of these guises be contributing to the emergence of a socially responsible globalisation as an alternative paradigm to global neo-liberalism?
Colleagues working on aspects of this topic are invited to submit abstracts to me by MARCH 15th. Depending on the response to this call and the calls from colleagues organising other activities consideration may be given to examining overlaps with other panels such as the stream IV.1 Europe in the World System and European Social Policy Network's other panel on The European Model and Global Competition.
Best wishes, Bob Deacon.
