UNIVERSITY OF DUBLIN, TRINITY COLLEGE
DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
MPHIL IN ETHNIC AND RACIAL STUDIES
Applications are invited for a 12-month postgraduate degree in Ethnic and
Racial Studies. This innovative MPhil programme offers specialist
theoretical and practical training in issues relating to race and ethnicity
in the Irish, European and global contexts. It is well placed in Ireland,
where ethnic conflicts have been central to the construction of Irish
identity. Traditionally an emigration country, Ireland is increasingly
becoming an in-migration destination.
The programme, the only one of its kind in Ireland, begins in October 1999,
and is run by the Department of Sociology, whose staff has expertise and an
extensive publication record in this area. The programme consists of two
core courses and six one-term courses plus a 15,000-20,000 words
dissertation.
Applicants should hold a good first degree in the social sciences or have
a social sciences component in their first degree. The programme is also
ideally suited to public servants and voluntary agencies staff whose work
experience may be taken into account.
