GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT RESEARCH UNIT (GEMRU)
Pure and applied research and consultancy activities within the geography,
geoscience and environment area in Cheltenham and Gloucester College of
Higher Education are focused together within the Geography and Environmental
Management Research Unit (GEMRU). GEMRU is one of three Research Units in
the Faculty of Environment and Leisure. GEMRU builds on the established
national and international strengths in academic research and the growing
applied research and consultancy expertise of the geography and environment
area.
GEMRU's research activity is focused around inter-disciplinary themes linked
by their focus on environmental and climatic change, environmental quality,
social well-being or the promotion of sustainable development. Growth
research themes include climate change, pure and applied fluvial
geomorphology and water resource
management, mineral resources and management and sustainable cities.
GEMRU's activities capitalise on the integration of a range of social
science and earth science expertise and consultancy skills in environmental
management. In the past ten years, GEMRU associated research and
consultancy has benefitted from research funding totalling over £2 million.
There are >30 students on PhD programmes in cognate areas in the Research
