Local Economic Restructuring: social and environmental impacts
VIth International Planning & Environment Research Group Conference
26th-29th June 1999, Brunel University, London, UK
Global processes are producing a variety of forms of economic
restructuring at the local and regional level. Throughout Western
Europe economies are being reshaped. Within the UK, for example, areas
such as West London have experienced high rates of economic growth,
particularly in services and in high technology and global distribution
industries; elsewhere, particularly in the former manufacturing areas,
deindustrialisation has resulted in job losses and dereliction. For
Central and Eastern Europe, economic restructuring in response to
political change has been particularly profound. For each of these
scenarios there are significant environmental and social impacts, which
this conference will explore in a number of settings.
This conference is intended to bring together researchers,
professionals, politicians, practitioners and activists working in this
area. Therefore, anyone researching the impacts of economic
restructuring on localities or regions, designing policies to respond to
these impacts, or working with groups within areas subject to these
processes is invited to participate. We expect to be able to compare a
wide range of experiences and welcome participants from around the
world.
The conference will include plenary and workshop sessions, oral and
poster presentations, and local field visits. A number of themes for
discussion have already been identified - including: impacts on
children, social and economic exclusion, new urban policy (including the
role of TECs and the SRB), EU policy, and environmental regulation - but
the flexibility of the conference organisation means that additional
themes and topics can still be included. The convenors hope to maximise
the utility of this conference by ensuring adequate time for discussion,
and contributors will be encouraged to open up questions for discussion
and to facilitate interaction between participants. Prospective
participants should contact the convenors as soon as possible at the
address below. Either print-off and complete the appended form or
