Dear all,
With apologies for cross-posting, please see below a copy of a press
release which has been forwarded to me.

services run by Disabled People for Disabled People) is under treat of
closure because funds have been with drawn by Lambeth Borough Council in
South London.
The Disability Movement as fort hard over decades to establish such
resources, run and controlled by the community. This is a winnable battle
provided that the CIL gets the support it needs.
* Please send messages of support by e-mail, fax or post direct to the CIL.
* Please send donations, to the campaign, made payable to "Lambeth CIL".
* If you live, study or work near to the CIL , please go down and visit the
occupation, to see what is going on; to give moral and practical support.
Thank you in advance for anything you are able to do to assist this
important campaign.

PRESS RELEASE
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES…
Disabled People are DUG IN and take to the Streets
The working occupation of Lambeth Centre for Independent Living (CIL) is
now entering its third week and gaining strength. Lambeth CIL has been
occupied since 1/2/99 following Lambeth Council's decision to axe funding.
On Saturday 13th February, Disabled People occupying Lambeth CIL were
joined by Disabled supporters, nation-wide including members of Disabled
People's Direct Action Network (DAN).
We took to the streets collecting further support and more than 500
signatures for our petition against closure, which, will be presented to
Lambeth Council's forthcoming Social Services committee meeting at Lambeth
Town Hall on Thursday the 18th February 1999 .
The CIL is the only centre that provides services BY Disabled People FOR
Disabled People, despite funding being axed, the centre is running
effectively and Disabled People are actively using these essential services
and visiting the centre.
Disabled People in Lambeth, are demanding a right to an independent
inquiry, a right of reply to the Council's report that recommended
withdrawal of funding, no job losses and a commitment to a Disabled
People's voice in Lambeth.
EXCELLENT PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Contact Julie on 0961 887 171 for further
